After completing degree in Medicinal and pharmaceutical Chemistry at The University of Loughborough in 1998 Kelly joined the Analytical Development department in AstraZeneca R&D. AstraZeneca is a world leading pharmaceutical company which develops new drugs in the following disease areas: Cancer, Cardiovascular, Gastrointestinal, Infection, Neuroscience and Respiratory & Inflammation.

The Analytical Development department is involved in the development of new drug formulations (e.g. tablets, inhalers, injectables etc) and the department focuses on the quality testing and stability of the formulations using analytical techniques. In particular she is experienced in chromatographic techniques, delivery of analytical targets during different phases of development and compliance with legal requirements for pharmaceuticals. She is also gaining experience in the use of design of experiments and statistics.

Kelly can answer questions on Chemistry and Analytical chemistry/science.

Laura Downes

After completing degree in Chemistry at The University of Birmingham in 1998 Laura joined the Analytical Development department in AstraZeneca R&D. Rebecca Godridge

Rebecca has an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bradford which involved three industrial placements in Leeds, Antwerp (Belgium) and Cambridge. In 2007 Rebecca went on to start an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Formulation Engineering with the University of Birmingham. The EngD studies were carried out in industry at a large multi-national household goods manufacturer in the field of granular detergent storage stability, where Rebecca developing expertise in microscopy, sorption isotherm measurement and computational modelling.

Rebecca is currently working for Rolls Royce as a Technical Engineer in the Submarines group, working towards chartered status with the Institute of Chemical Engineers.

She can answer questions about postgraduate study (particularly EngD’s), Chemical Engineering and related fields.

Amy Barley

Amy graduated from the University of Birmingham with a BEng Honours in Engineering with Business Management. She then joined the Rail Industry, starting the Graduate Scheme at Bombardier Transportation in September 2007. Bombardier Transportation is the world leader in rail technology with a presence in more than 22 countries, with over 100,000 vehicles in operation. Since being with the company she has spent time with:

Fleet Engineering, investigating issues with the day to day running of trains
Integration Engineering, assessing modification submissions
Materials Engineering, assessing the application of materials and their fire properties
Depot Operations, working with the team to get the trains into service
Predictive Services Engineering, working with the team to assess the maintenance plans

In September 2009 she starts her first appointment in Materials Engineering. She is also two years into her Initial Professional Development working towards Chartered Engineer status.
She can answer questions on studying Engineering, the Rail Industry, Graduate Schemes and Initial Professional Development.

Zoe Lawson

After completing a degree in Biological Science, Zoe went on to study for a PhD in Biological Chemistry at The University of Birmingham. Her research looked at the biochemical structure of a receptor protein as a target for therapeutic drug design. Immediately after her PhD, Zoe completed a one-year business for science fellowship (The Medici Fellowship), where she acquired the business and innovation skills required for scientific technology transfer. Following this, Zoe went to work at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, where she did a short research project looking at rice plant proteins. Zoe has since worked in the UK and Malaysia on a pan-European biotechnology project involving 10 EU countries and she currently works as Business Development Executive for Medicine and Health Sciences at The University of Nottingham. Zoe’s job involves helping the scientists and researchers at the university access funding for their work by building relationships with industry (e.g. pharmaceutical companies). Zoe is also hoping to start an MBA specialising in Healthcare at Nottingham Business School in September.

Zoe can answer questions about biology, chemistry, plant science and pharmacy.

Anthea Antonio

Anthea is a chartered electrical engineer but in her role as Engineering Manager of Nottingham Tram she is in charge of all kinds of engineering activity including the maintenance of track, sub-stations, overhead line and trams. ‘For me this is the perfect job,’ Anthea says, ‘because it encompasses a little bit of many types of engineering. In total I have 17 years experience in railway maintenance, although I can’t believe it’s that long.’

She spent the first 5 years of her career in railway signalling maintenance before generalizing into the management of all infrastructure (track, signalling, overhead line) and from there she joined Nottingham tram. ‘I have had very positive experiences in this industry, not always easy but always challenging and often rewarding.’

Anthea can advise on many different aspects of engineering as well as management.

Fiona Hamilton-MacLaren

Fiona completed her masters degree in Civil Engineering with an industrial placement year working for the Environment Agency in 2008. Fiona is now researching sustainable construction for her PhD at Loughborough University. She has worked in industry, both in an office and in the field.

Fiona can answer questions on civil engineering, sustainable construction, the experience of working on construction sites and the undergraduate and postgraduate study experience.

Emma Hines

Emma has a BSc Hons in Environmental Earth Science and an MSc in Environmental Diagnostics from Cranfield University. Emma currently works for Lafarge, who are world leaders in building materials (www.lafarge.com) The group controls a unique portfolio of businesses; Cement, Aggregates, Concrete and Gypsum. Lafarge designs and produces building materials to meet the requirements of people throughout the world and believes that ongoing advances in building materials must integrate respect for people, their different needs and their environment. The Group creates high value-added solutions which encourage creativity whilst leaving a lighter trace on the world.

Emma has worked in various technical, production & commercial roles and is currently the National Readymix Marketing & Performance Manager. Emma says “The main focus of my role is to ensure our commercial teams have the best resources and information available to advance the business and to share best practice across the readymix concrete business unit.” She is responsible for monitoring business performance and also contributes to the sustainable development of the business unit.

She can answer questions on Environmental Earth Sciences, on Sustainable Development and on working as a Manager.

Katy Milne

Katy graduated with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Strathclyde University in 2005. During her undergraduate degree she did summer placements with Rolls-Royce and Procter and Gamble and spent a year studying Engineering in Italy. She is currently studying for an Engineering Doctorate (EngD), looking at inspection technologies for Rolls-Royce and supervised by Imperial College. High quality inspection is important in the aerospace industry because safety is so important. The same inspection technologies can be used in many different industries for numerous applications, including nuclear power plant, car components and wind turbine blades. An EngD is a type of PhD, where the research is based in industry and the student also does courses on technical and management subjects.

During her EngD, Katy did a three-month placement at the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) in London sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. POST produces briefings for MPs and peers on a range of science and technology subjects. The briefings are available at http://www.parliament.uk/parliamentary_offices/post/pubs.cfm

Jen Rogers

Jen Rogers

Jen studied Maths at A Level, Business Management at Bachelors Degree level and Global Supply Chain Management at Masters Degree level. She currently works in Purchasing at Rolls-Royce.

Manufacturing companies need to buy in parts (from the ‘supply chain’) as well as invoice their customers. Jen can advise on many business/commercial/supply-chain aspects of work, particularly in an engineering environment but also in business in general.
